Greetings!
Welcome
to The Electric Sunshine Factory, where we are busy working on some things we
hope will catch your eye. Our main project is Infection: First Contact, a
visual novel that will push the boundaries of sci-fi and horror.
“From
even the greatest of horrors irony is seldom absent.”
―
H.P. Lovecraft, Tales of H. P. Lovecraft
This
visual novel is created out of our love for interactive entertainment and great
stories. Our company is young, yet our project is well underway in its
development. You can keep track of our progress on our main site, through the
company twitter, or even by discussing it on our community forums.
So.
What is Infection: First Contact? Plainly speaking, it's a western visual
novel. This medium is one part comic, one part choose-your-own-adventure, and
one part novel. By using simple game play mechanics you will take control of
the protagonist, and through your choices make him your own. Many developers
aim to provide players choices with lasting impacts, but no other style of
video game does so with the impact that visual novels do. The novel-style
composition of the game, your choices guide the game's story without sacrificing
mechanics or playability.
A
simple design for a sleek look and greater play accessibility.
So
how does character choice really make an impact? The first way we have done
this is that each decision you have is put into the game with a reason in mind.
There is no filler, and each divergent path placed in the game is designed to
let the player explore the results of his actions. There is no judgment in the
narrative, only consequences that result from the player's choices. Small
choices in casual conversation may only change the tone of a chat, but how you
deal with major choices can mean the difference between life and death.
An
example of a storyboard from a scrapped story path, and of our production methods.
This
means multiple endings, which usually come with sacrifices. However, we have
worked to ensure that there are no good endings or bad endings in our game.
Each ending tells a unique story, and each one is rewarding. In all, we have
over ten original endings planned for this game, and over twenty when taking
into account small variations. It is not The Electric Sunshine Factory's goal
to tell one horror story through this game- it is to tell a dozen of them.
As
more information becomes concrete, we will be keeping you updated all along the
way. All this will lead up to our Kickstarter launch, and although we aren't
making the date public it looks like it's going to be early summer.
Look
forward to our next blog post, when we talk about our artistic goals with
Infection: First Contact. You'll also get a chance to meet some of our staff,
and some of the game's cast!
